What it is
What Cannot Be Lost is a creative digital storytelling project: “a life kept as honeycomb.” Each cell is one moment, the sheets are decades, and the colours are what a piece is about — “nothing is in order, yet nothing is out of order.”
The narrative architecture
The piece is built around a spatial metaphor rather than a timeline. Visitors can:
- Enter “the hive” and begin at a starting telling (“Boy Erased”).
- Choose to listen to the spoken story or read it “comb by comb.”
- Drift — find their own way through, unguided.
- Move through sections such as spine, elevation, map, stories, scent, garden and keep.
- Leave “two words” in exchange for a poem.
The design intervention
The challenge is giving a nonlinear story a shape people can hold in their head and navigate by feel — supporting both a guided path and free exploration, in sound and in text, without losing the reader.
The technology selected
A custom, sound-enabled web experience built around the honeycomb structure. TODO(founder): confirm any details you want to add about the work or its making.
